LEARNING PLATFORMS

What should your custom LMS include?

Plan a learning management system around course delivery, learner progress, assessments, reporting and paid access.

Begin with the learning model.

An employee training portal and an online course business may both use an LMS, but their priorities differ. Internal training may focus on assigned learning and completion reporting. A course business may need discovery, purchases and self-service access.

Define your audience, how people enrol and what successful completion means. These decisions shape the course structure, assessment rules and administrator tools.

Map content, progress and assessment

Decide how courses break into modules and lessons, which content formats are supported and whether learners must follow a sequence. Specify whether progress means opening a lesson, completing an activity or passing an assessment.

If certificates are required, define the conditions for issuing one and whether expiry or renewal applies. Existing content formats and interoperability requirements, including any SCORM requirement, should be reviewed before implementation.

  • Course authoring, publishing and version management.
  • Learner roles, groups, enrolment and access expiry.
  • Assessments, attempts, feedback and completion criteria.
  • Progress reports for learners, managers and administrators.
  • Notifications that help learners continue without overwhelming them.

Connect paid access carefully

For paid learning, define whether customers buy a course, a membership or organisation-wide access. Billing and enrolment must agree when a payment succeeds, expires or is reversed.

A subscription change may affect future lessons while completed records must remain available under your agreed policy. Design these rules before connecting a checkout button.

Start with a complete learning journey

A useful first release lets an administrator publish a course, a learner access and complete it, and the appropriate person view the result. Advanced gamification or community features can follow if they serve the audience.

Test with representative content and real learner tasks before launch. Good reporting depends on meaningful progress rules; a polished dashboard cannot compensate for tracking the wrong events.
