CHOOSING A PARTNER
How to choose a software development partner
Assess a development partner through relevant work, discovery questions, delivery responsibilities and verifiable evidence.
Project planning guide
Look for relevant evidence
Ask what the team actually delivered in the examples they show. A product, prototype and client engagement provide different evidence. Relevant decisions and constraints tell you more than an unexplained logo wall.
Test understanding in the first conversation
A useful provider asks about users, rules, dependencies and failure cases before promising a solution. Notice whether they explain tradeoffs in language your team understands.
- Who handles discovery, design, development and testing?
- How will you review working software and raise concerns?
- What information must your business supply?
- How are scope changes estimated and approved?
- Who owns accounts, code and maintenance responsibilities?
Check references with permission
Where available, request a relevant reference or walkthrough with permission from those involved. Ask about communication, delivery and problem handling. An award or positive review does not guarantee a particular outcome.
Choose a concrete first commitment
Agree a bounded next step, outputs and acceptance criteria: discovery, a prototype or a defined first release. Make support and handover expectations part of the agreement so the relationship is assessed through working evidence.
Make it specific to your business
