Best Digital Payment Platforms for Ecommerce

Published

Illustration of an online checkout with payment choices and delivery parcels

The best digital payment platforms for ecommerce help customers finish their purchases and help you manage the money afterwards. The lowest advertised fee is only one part of that job.

For a South African store, start with the payment methods your customers use, the shopping platform you run and the time it takes to receive your sales money. Then compare costs, refunds and support.

Quick answer: Peach Payments and Payfast are worth comparing for a broad checkout. Paystack suits stores that also need developer flexibility. Yoco deserves a look when you sell in person as well as online. Ozow offers bank payments and an expanded range of methods. Netcash may fit an existing business finance setup. Payflex can add buy now, pay later alongside the main gateway.

This is a comparison of published South African products, not a claim that one provider converts better than all the others. Research checked 24 September 2026.

Start with one R2,000 purchase

Imagine a shopper buying a R2,000 kitchen appliance. They reach checkout and want to pay. Three customers might choose three different routes:

  • Card or wallet: choose Apple Pay, authenticate and complete the purchase, where the device and card support it.
  • Pay by bank: select a bank, authenticate through the supported bank flow and approve the payment.
  • BNPL: choose a buy now, pay later provider, pass its eligibility checks and accept an instalment plan.

BNPL means splitting a purchase into instalments. A digital wallet such as Apple Pay or Google Pay uses a supported saved payment method. Instant EFT/pay-by-bank uses a bank-based payment flow instead of a normal card payment.

The steps vary by provider and device. Fewer taps may suit one customer; paying directly from a bank account may suit another. Preference and familiarity are useful things to test. There is no need to assume people distrust a particular provider.

When choosing the best digital payment platforms for ecommerce, look for the payment choices your customers can actually use. A cheaper method does not help much if the shopper abandons the basket because their preferred option is missing.

Compare checkout options first

“Yes” means documented availability, with merchant activation and eligibility still applying. “Depends” means the particular product, plugin or contract matters. A plugin is a ready-made connection between your store and the payment provider.

What each provider brings to a store

Peach Payments: compare payment choice and checkout layout

Peach Payments official logo

Peach's range includes cards, bank payments, wallets and BNPL. Its embedded checkout is worth comparing with a redirect, where the shopper temporarily leaves your site to pay. Neither layout guarantees a higher sales rate: test the journey on a phone, including bank authentication.

Confirm which methods your plugin exposes and what a refund costs for each one. A returned item should not become a manual investigation across several systems.

Paystack: useful if the store also needs custom features

Paystack official logo

Paystack combines store integrations with payment and refund APIs. An API lets your software ask the provider to perform a task, such as refunding an order. This can help when a store grows into a custom ordering platform.

Its SA pricing separates local cards, international cards and bank methods. Both Apple Pay and Google Pay have setup requirements. Enable international payments if you need eligible foreign cards; accepting those cards does not automatically mean you settle in foreign currency.

Payfast: familiar store integrations and broad methods

Payfast official logo

Payfast lists cards, Instant EFT, Capitec Pay, wallets and Payflex among its payment methods. For a normal online shop, check its existing plugin before paying for a custom integration.

Budget for withdrawals and refunds as well as checkout fees. A business refunding many low-value orders can feel fixed fees more strongly than a store selling a few expensive products.

PayGate official logo

PayGate is the separate gateway route in the Network product family, with a different merchant-account arrangement and quote. Compare it if your business already has an internet merchant account or specific bank requirements. See the aggregation versus gateway explanation.

Yoco: online and counter sales in one business view

Yoco official logo

A boutique using a Yoco card machine may benefit from its online store using the same ecosystem. Yoco describes combined sales reconciliation on its gateway page. Reconciliation means checking that orders, payment records, fees and bank deposits agree.

Its newer detailed plan pricing includes online fixed charges and BNPL, so do not budget using an older percentage-only comparison. Confirm the current plan and the methods visible in your actual checkout.

Ozow: compare bank savings without removing customer choice

Ozow official logo

Ozow's current pricing page covers pay-by-bank, cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, BNPL and other methods. Its integration guides distinguish the available ways to connect them.

Bank payments can cost less than cards, especially on larger orders. That is a reason to offer them clearly, not proof that every customer should be forced to use them. Measure completed orders by method before rearranging checkout around a headline rate.

Netcash: a store connected to wider finance processes

Netcash official logo

Netcash's gateway supports multiple payment methods and pays proceeds into a Netcash account. Businesses can withdraw funds or use separately arranged payment services. This may fit a company already using Netcash for accounts administration.

Get a quote for the gateway you need. A Netcash Shop bundle, a Shopify article and a debit-order service are not interchangeable price lists. Foreign 3D Secure-enabled cards can be accepted, but the gateway processes transactions in rand.

Payflex: add instalments where the purchase suits them

Payflex official logo

Payflex may be an additional checkout method rather than a replacement for the main gateway. Its merchant offering also describes an opt-in Pay Now option; ask which product your agreement includes.

Keep the customer message accurate. Approval and instalment terms apply, and “interest-free” does not mean there are never late-payment charges. Its consumer terms explain eligibility, missed payments and returns.

For a returned appliance, process the refund through the correct Payflex flow so the instalment plan can be adjusted. A separate cash refund does not automatically cancel that plan. Its order API supports full and partial refunds.

Public South African fee comparison

Pricing last checked: 24 September 2026. This is an entry-level reference. Negotiated rates, risk categories, card types and payment-method contracts can change the quote.

Peach, Paystack collection fees, Payfast and Yoco figures exclude VAT. Ozow's page does not clearly identify VAT treatment. Confirm it before comparing totals. Missing prices mean contact provider, not free.

Two pricing conflicts deserve attention. Payfast's Instant EFT headline says 2% with a R2 minimum, but its example charges R12 on R500. Yoco's detailed plan page includes R2 for online transactions while some marketing pages omit it. We use the detailed Yoco plan as a budgeting reference and leave Payfast EFT calculations unranked until clarified.

Payfast lists Payflex through its checkout at 5.45% + R5, excluding VAT. This is a gateway-specific BNPL rate, not Payflex's universal direct fee. Payfast also lists R2 per refund, excluding VAT. Source: Payfast fees.

Compare like with like in rand

These are calculated local-card processing costs, excluding VAT and all other charges. Yoco uses the detailed Core lower-volume schedule above.

R10,000R291.00R296.50R297.00R322.00

For the R2,000 appliance, Peach's listed ordinary local-card fee calculates to R60.50, compared with R31.50 for its bank method: a R29 difference before VAT. That compares two different payment methods from one price schedule, not two identical services.

By comparison, Payflex via Payfast calculates to R114 before VAT on R2,000. BNPL is a different proposition: the merchant pays for an instalment option. Assess that cost against your margin and actual completed sales rather than ranking it as a more expensive card transaction.

The cheapest rate can still produce a costly checkout

The best digital payment platforms for ecommerce balance cost with a usable buying experience. Checkout conversion means the share of customers who start checkout and finish an order.

Track these simple numbers before and after a change:

  • How many shoppers reach the payment step?
  • How many choose each method?
  • How many complete payment, and how many are declined?
  • How many leave while switching to a bank app?
  • How many need support or a refund?

Do not assume every abandoned cart is a payment problem. Unexpected delivery charges, missing stock and account-creation requirements can also interrupt a purchase.

For a first launch, offer a sensible set of relevant methods and display the total early. A payment link can help a customer complete an assisted order, but link it to the same order record so staff do not create a duplicate sale.

Check when money becomes usable

Settlement is when collected money is paid to your business. A payment confirmation can arrive before the bank deposit.

Paystack states two working days for normal SA payouts. Yoco's gateway FAQ states a maximum of two business days. Peach describes next-business-day daily settlement, but its Growth table also notes daily settlement after two weeks of trading. Ozow advertises next-day settlement. Confirm cut-offs, new-account conditions and public-holiday handling in your agreement. Sources: Paystack, Yoco, Peach and Ozow.

For Payfast, PayGate, Netcash and Payflex, obtain the applicable settlement schedule and refund rules for your product. Do not infer a guaranteed bank-arrival time from “get paid upfront”.

Your full monthly cost can include gateway fees, VAT on fees, store-platform charges, paid plugins, withdrawals, refunds and disputes. A Shopify plan may have third-party transaction fees in addition to gateway fees; check the Shopify fee guidance for your account.

A store launch checklist that catches real problems

  1. Place a real low-value order using each enabled method after sandbox testing.
  2. Confirm the order is marked paid from a verified provider message, not just the return page.
  3. Cancel checkout halfway through and check that stock is released correctly.
  4. Refund one item from a multi-item order.
  5. Match the bank deposit to orders and deducted fees.
  6. Ask a nontechnical person to buy on a phone without coaching.

A webhook is the provider's automatic message to your store about a payment. It can arrive late or more than once, so the store must handle it safely. Paystack's webhook guidance explains this part of the integration.

For a custom shopping app, see payment platforms for mobile apps. Selling software memberships calls for a different comparison: payment platforms for SaaS. If outside vendors sell through your store, start with multi-vendor payments before collecting money on their behalf.

Frequently asked questions

Should I offer only the cheapest payment method?

Usually that is too narrow a decision. Compare the cost saving with what happens to completed sales. Offer methods your actual customers can use and keep the checkout understandable.

Does Payflex replace my gateway?

It can sit alongside your gateway as an instalment option, or be offered through a supported gateway integration. Its opt-in Pay Now product is a separate consideration. Confirm the exact arrangement and fees.

Which are the best digital payment platforms for ecommerce on WooCommerce or Shopify?

Begin with supported integrations, then compare payment methods, refunds, the complete fee stack and settlement. A provider that suits WooCommerce may expose different options in its Shopify integration.

Can overseas customers pay?

Several providers support eligible international cards, but approval, currency and settlement differ. Being able to accept a foreign card is not the same as operating a foreign-currency bank balance.
